August 5th, 2010

For those of you who have read the article “Zapping off those brown blotches” in Mind Your Body and am interested to use Tri-Luma to treat your melasma or brown spots, please read my review on the Tri-Luma cream. It may work to some extent but it does have its limitations. In fact, I was concerned that certain important information were omitted in the article.replica louis vuitton bags

First, your skin can become thinner using Tri-Luma because this is a skin bleaching cream! replica louis vuitton bags

Headwear

August 3rd, 2010

Everyday headwear is has made a comeback especially with younger people. Hats can vary from knit beanies to fur or feather inspired pieces zany enough to revive as cocktail hats. But the Fedora is the most important hat revival style.

Far right – Purple velvet trilby from French Connection is priced at £30.

Hair Ornaments
In the past 5 years, we have rediscovered terms like barrette, a hair accessory name that almost went out of use.

Beautiful hairclips, bobby pins, barrette slides, hairclips and grips can all be jewel decorated to add a glamorous touch to any hairstyle.

Left – Plumo hair combs with crystals.

In particular hair ornaments are very fashionable both day and evening. Many hair accessories will suit current French pleats and other updo hairstyles. Other hairstyles to consider are classic bobs and also the Victoria asymmetric bob.

As the season becomes more festive expect hair ornaments to go wild. Hair decoration began to happen again when women started to wear flowers and fascinator hat pieces in their hair. These small, but festive hair accessories have become perfect for adding a partied-up touch for weddings and other social occasions, especially when the protocol for wearing headwear is optional. Evening wedding receptions have created a great deal of difficulty for women who ponder the need for wearing a hat for ’special occasion’ dressing.

Now all sorts of new creative accessories are being used to decorate the hair. These little works of art certainly make a welcome change from those straight hair extensions of yesterday.

Bridal wear has already been the prime place for tiara wear and Pearls Plus make them to order.

Right – Other items Pearls Plus make for the hair include these coloured freshwater pearl pieces. The coloured pearls and dainty Swarovski crystals catch the light and reflect lovely colours that match your dress.

Decorative brow headbands and forehead drops and lariats are an accessory area about to see more demand within the jewellery marketplace. Some of the decorative pieces seen on hair accessories this season are just as likely to be adorning belts.

Hosiery

August 3rd, 2010

Hosiery is very much at the fore of fashion this autumn Winter 2007/8. Some styles of clothing only gel when worn with coloured or patterned tights and wildly contrasting footwear.

Coloured shoes can be worn with thick or opaque black tights, coloured tights, animal print tights or lace hosiery.

Gloves
Gloves have been a growing trend ever since three quarter and elbow sleeves started appearing on outdoor winter wear.

For a super deluxe evening think gold or metallic gloves like these shown left and from Plumo.

Gloves of all types especially elbow length gloves or ditsy short gloves set the tone of your outfit. Right – Wallis long grey ruched leather gloves, £22, €36, long teal button detail gloves, £18, €30. Left studded gloves from Marks and Spencers.

For gloves that may become vintage in the years check out those at House of Fraser. House of Fraser glove departments are stocking Dents black leather cut out gloves with a diamante box cut out finish at £49.

Katy Perry is Loved Up with Her Chloe Paddington Purse

July 30th, 2010

She’s got her man, she’s got her rock, and she’s got her gold Chloe Paddington handbag. What more does a girl need? Katy Perry stepped out with new fiance Russell Brand and her luxe purse recently, but I have to be honest — the bold metallic doesn’t really work with Katy’s more somber gray outfit. And, just asking, but are she and Rusty supposed to match? Ugh.

Add a touch of sweetness and light to your winter basics before moving this chic See by Chloe Funny Love Crossbody Bag into spring. That’s when it will be most appropriate, but even now it serves as a great alternative to bulky bags and will instantly bring some contrast to the season’s dark hues. I love the utilitarian-glamorous thing it has going on – despite being great for everyday use, it has a fashion-forward look thanks to its metallic pink leather and slouchy shape. BERLIN – A memorial service will be held for the 20 people crushed to death in a mass panic at the Love Parade techno festival, German officials said Tuesday, as hundreds of people lit candles, left notes and placed flowers at the site of the tragedy.

People in the western German city of Duisburg gathered to express their grief near where the victims died and 500 others were injured in a jammed tunnel that was the lone entry to the annual festival meant to celebrate peace and love.

Some cried and clung to loved ones. Many lined up to sign a condolence book placed between two red candles in the middle of the tunnel.

People also expressed deep anger at city authorities, particularly Mayor Adolf Sauerland, whom they blame for failing to adequately plan for the event. Organizers have come under fire for allegedly trying to squeeze as many as 1.4 million revelers into too small a space and for allowing only one access point onto the grounds.

One note read: “Sauerland, resign! You failed

Book takes on big food questions with wit and grit

July 28th, 2010

Buzz up!3 votes ShareretweetEmailPrint AP – In this book cover image released by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, ‘Eating for Beginners: An Education in … By RASHA MADKOUR, Associated Press Writer Rasha Madkour, Associated Press Writer – Tue Jul 27, 9:58 am ET
“Eating for Beginners: An Education in the Pleasures of Food From Chefs, Farmers, and One Picky Kid” (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, $25), by Melanie Rehak: “Eating for Beginners” starts with a stark statistic: 61 percent of Americans are confused about what to feed their family.

What follows is a cross between “The Omnivore’s Dilemma” and “The Girlfriends’ Guide to Toddlers” — an exhaustively researched and delightfully witty account of author Melanie Rehak’s adventurous year working at a local restaurant and tracing its food supply to the sources, as well as grappling with her young son who won’t eat a thing.

Through her visits to dairy, produce and animal farms, Rehak gains a deeper appreciation for the difficulties facing local farmers — and the need to support them. Organic food seems more expensive because the costs are more visible, one of her sources tells her. But the costs of conventionally grown food include public funding of irrigation projects and crop subsidies, not to mention pollution and food-borne illnesses.

Back on the homefront, readers can track the budding language skills of Rehak’s son, Jules, in the myriad ways he refuses almost every edible thing she offers him — from “No” to “No this” to “No chicken. No pasta. No fish.”

The juxtaposition between these dual tracks in Rehak’s life — food and parenting — makes for an amusing read. After methodically describing how to butcher a duck, and the struggle involved in clipping a baby’s nails, Rehak dryly concludes: “You genuinely feel it’s easier to butcher a duck.”

Despite her conviction that local is the way to go, Rehak (author of “Girl Sleuth: Nancy Drew and the Women Who Created Her”) is reasonable and flexible in the belief, knowing that it’s not always possible to be choosy.

The general issue of accessibility of local produce and livestock, however, is unfortunately not addressed, a gaping hole in the book.

“Eating for Beginners” is funny, informative and relatable. And if you find your mouth watering at some of the dishes mentioned, Rehak is considerate enough to include recipes at the end of each chapter

Rodarte Honoured

July 26th, 2010

SISTERS Kate and Laura Mulleavy of Rodarte have been announced as the 2010 winner of the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Award for Fashion Design. The design duo beat off stiff competition from Behnaz Sarafpour and Proenza Schouler’s Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez.

“This is such a big deal because there is always the question [of] if you approach to design in an artistic way and whether you view your work as art,” Laura Mulleavy said. “It is amazing to have a community you are not always part of recognize your work.”

Rodarte was nominated for the award last year but was beaten by Francisco Costa for Calvin Klein. Michelle Obama, who has been seen wearing the label before, is honorary patron of the event which will take place on October 14 in New York. The sisters went on a low-key night out to celebrate their win.

“The Lakers are playing and they have kind of taken over our town,” Mulleavy said to WWD, “so we will probably just take over the jukebox at this little place we like to go to. And then, of course, we will just get back to work.”

Obama’s Take

July 26th, 2010

MICHELLE OBAMA put Rodarte back in to the fashion headlines yesterday, naming them winners of the Fashion category at a lunch the First Lady hosted to celebrate America’s Cooper-Hewitt National Design Awards – held at the White House. The designers were told of their win three weeks ago (read about it here), but failed to make it to yesterday’s ceremony -due to a “family obligation”.

Paying tribute to the design industry as a whole, Obama, who wore Isabel Toledo for the occasion, recalled the words of one of her husband’s favourite musicians:

“The great jazz musician Miles Davis – one of my husband’s favourites – once said, ‘Don’t play what’s there, play what’s not there,’” said Obama. “I think that is pretty much a good description of what each of you does every day: You’re playing what’s not there.”

“[Designers have] spent their lives pushing boundaries,” she said to WWD. “We know a little about boundary pushing- or just outright ignoring them altogether.”
